What do you get when you take a group of 26 determined, well-organised, competitive children to a Sportshall Athletics competition against 5 others schools, some almost 3 times the size of ours? 2ND PLACE!
I’m sure that you will read all about it from one of the Young Journalists who were in the team, but to summarise, the whole team performed heroically to clinch second place in the Coastal region competition. Despite not winning a single track heat until they blitzed the opposition in the very last race (the boys 4×1 which also followed a great run from the girl’s 4×1 team), the team picked up enough points to combine with a dominant performance in the field events.
The final scores were as follows:
1st Alford 244 points (approx 330 children)
2nd BURGH 200 points (approx 200 children)
3rd Woodhall 192 points (approx 240 children)
4th Richmond 162 points (approx 360 children)
5th Horncastle 140 points (approx 560 children)
6th Chapel 98 points (approx 180 children)
Fortunately, Mr. Hurdman’s nemesis (mentioned here) is now at Friskney, who are in tomorrows small school version of the competition!
A huge THANK YOU must go to the parents who helped transport the children to and from the event and who also supported them throughout, even when things looked a little grim on the track. WELL DONE to the 5 Y5 children who joined us and also to our fantastic team-member from Y4! The biggest WELL DONE however, must go to the whole team who surpassed even Mr. Hurdman’s modest prediction of 3rd place made during the morning and certainly surpassed his rather gloomy prediction made during the competition! As some adults will know though, these predictions have now developed into one of his bizarre motivational techniques!
Sadly these days, there is no further competition other than for the winners (who go straight into the County Final). As recently as two years ago, the top two or three would then go into a regional round before the County Final but this no longer takes place.
This group of children can be proud though to add their names to the recent successes in this competition.
