We ran the first qualifier for the The ‘Snowman’ Winter Fun Race this afternoon. This is a National KS2 v KS3 v KS4 race set up by Hillside Primary School, Dundee. We had already worked out most of the features in maths sessions on angle before the break and so today we took to the computers to set up our cars. This took a few minutes to get going as we had to deal with a couple of technical issues with the laptops. However, this was eventually resolved and off we went. With minimal help from Mr. Hurdman, we were able to set up and fuel our cars for the 53 lap race. This was made easier by working in pairs – those currently near the top of the championship worked with those near the bottom!
Mr. Hurdman was perhaps too generous with the deadline for fuelling the car and some entrants shouldn’t really have made the grid. He’s far too nice you know! Anyway, the race was the closest yet with less that half a second separating the first two cars, with the lead swapping places on the very last lap!
The overall winners, and the first two names in the team on this occasion are James and Tash. Samuel and Kerys (who obviously felt ‘at home’ on the circuit), were runners up on this occasion. Class championship points were awarded to both team members in points scoring positions and this has been updated accordingly here. Mr. Hurdman himself could only manage 4th position, and we believe that he IS really trying his hardest too.
The final two names on the team sheet will be determined after everyone has had a chance to spend a couple of dinner times tweaking or creating new cars. This will give Billie and Chloe a chance to put fuel in and Declan, Sian and Joe and chance to work out why they broke down. (Young Leaders will have a little time in class to do this!).
The entry has to be sent off by 5pm on Friday so for us this represents loads of time left!
Once this race is completed there is the small matter of the National Challenge 1st Round and perhaps the most important race of the year – a challenge issued by Alford Grammar School!
